More than 8,160 Pennsylvania dentists are actively practicing. An estimated 21.7 percent of these dentists are female, according to Kaiser State Health Facts. While nearly 80 percent of Pennsylvania dentists are general dentistry practitioners, Pennsylvania dentists also practice in specialties such as oral surgery, endodontics, orthodontics and periodontics.

An estimated 69.9 percent of Pennsylvania residents have visited a Pennsylvania dentist or dental clinic in the past year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “State Oral Health Profile.” While this number is high, tooth decay is still a problem, particularly for children. An estimated 27.3 percent of Pennsylvania third-grade students had untreated tooth decay and 21.5 percent of the Pennsylvania population ages 65 or older have lost all of their teeth.
